Openreach Service Delivery Transformation
Attendance Patterns Ballot
20 August 2009
You will receive a ballot paper for your vote on the proposed agreement on attendance patterns between Openreach and the CWU.
If you work in Openreach you will be affected by these proposals. If you do not influence the outcome of this vote you may be propelled into a course of action or forced to accept something that you are opposed to without having a say. Please do not let someone else make your decision.
Some things you need to consider:
- If this proposal is accepted Openreach will abandon Project Beck which involved moving nearly 9000 people out of BT Openreach into a cartel of contracting companies. This is not just a consideration for those people working in complex; it would weaken us all.
- If these proposals are agreed Openreach is committed to continuing a voluntary approach to redundancy. In the current economic climate this is no small thing; there are large surpluses forecast regardless of the impact of Project Beck.
- If these proposals are agreed Openreach have also committed to seeking alternative work, bringing back in house work currently done by contractors, and returning off-shored work.
- The ability to seek and successfully bid for the installation and maintenance of products and services that use high speed broadband is crucial. As the Next Generation Access rolls out it will transform the network and this future alternative work will be vital to protect jobs.
- The price for these safeguards and commitments is the acceptance of new attendance patterns to be agreed within the proposed Framework Agreement.
- No one undervalues the deeply felt opinions held on this issue and the potential impact of change to work life balance.
- For some that impact will be too high a price to pay for others the safeguards and commitments will be more compelling. And there will be all shades of opinion in between.
Wherever you are on that spectrum please make sure you vote. Do not let someone else affect your future without having a say.
